Sterling silver is 92.5 percent silver and 7.5 percent copper. Copper is added to the silver to improve its strength and durability without changing the color of the silver. Only jewelry that is at least 92.5. percent silver ca be called "sterling silver". There are markings such as ".925," 92.5." or "925." that show that the jewelry meets the standard of the U.S. government and that it IS sterling silver.

Although sterling silver has the tendency of tarnishing relatively easy, this is because of the humidity in the air. It will first start off as a golden like hue on your sterling silver, then as time progresses it starts to turn black. This is called oxidization.
